The Georgetown University women’s basketball team made news recently when forward Shayla Cooper lost her shoe on defense and then hurled it into the air, hoping to block the opponent’s shot (she missed but the ball bounced off the rim). I’d like to think Cooper’s sneaker came off and, while holding it, she instinctively threw up her hands, and that’s when it went flying. As noted by the Associated Press (via Dan Steinberg in the Washington Post), there isn’t actually a rule concerning the midair shoe-block, but Cooper should have been called for an unsportsmanlike conduct foul.
