Windows on the World

Only once had I been to Windows on the World, the restaurant with the spectacular view of Manhattan from the 107th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower. It was around 1983. Eighteen years later the restaurant’s morning crew and the guests having breakfast up there along with thousands of others would perish in the 9/11 attacks. But what I didn’t realize (until chef Daniel Boulud told me back in 2007) was that WoW executive chef Michael Lomonaco was also there that fateful morning. But he had gone down to the optomitrist when the plane hit. Below is a CBS segment from 2011 on the restaurant, the missing workers, and the chef who now carries that burden of survival.
